RAW Adventures can provide training and assessment courses for Mountain Training’s Lowland Leader qualification scheme.

This nationally recognised walking qualification scheme has been designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in lowland countryside and woodland in summer conditions.

The scope and accessibility for this scheme makes it very achievable and appropriate for Duke of Edinburgh leaders and volunteer staff, for example.

RAW Adventures - Mountain Training Walking Awards

The scheme opens up a natural pathway to other awards and qualifications for leading and working with others in the outdoors.

  • You have an interest in leading groups in lowland countryside
  • Create a Candidate account on Mountain Training’s website
  • Register for the Lowland Leader scheme and pay your registration fee to Mountain Training

We are also happy to run bespoke courses for groups at an agreed location.

Training

We offer a 2 day (16 hour) training course, inclusive of time out practically with your group as well as some inside sessions to discuss further topics.

Lowland Leaders should be competent in the following key areas, all of which will be covered during your 2 day training course:

  • Leadership skills and group management
  • Walking skills
  • Planning a walk
  • Basic map and route finding skills
  • Equipment
  • Hazards and emergency procedures
  • Environmental awareness, conservation, access and land ownership
Course Cost £140.00 per person (1:6 ratio)

Assessment

This is a 2 day (16 hour) course designed to assess you against the syllabus competencies but will be run in a relaxed style to help you perform and achieve.

Before you attend an assessment you will also be sent a ‘Home Paper’ to complete in your own time. This will be a set of questions designed to explore many areas of the syllabus, some of which may not directly be covered in the 16 hour assessment contact time. Before booking, make sure you have done the following:

  • Attended a Lowland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • Be familiar with the syllabus
  • Logged a minimum of 20 walks in lowland countryside
  • Hold a current First Aid certificate, minimum 16 hours
  • Come prepared with all personal kit and equipment
Course Cost £140.00 per person (1:6 ratio)

Precise meet locations will be sent to you upon booking but our courses run from either near Llanberis, North Wales (NW) or South East England (SE).

We are also happy to run bespoke courses for groups at an agreed location. Please contact us to discuss further.

Once you have been successfully assessed, you can choose to undertake the Expedition Skills Module to further your experience of looking after groups on multi-day camping expeditions within the scope of your qualification.
