RAW Adventures can provide training and assessment courses for Mountain Training’s Hill and Moorland Leader qualification scheme.

This nationally recognised walking qualification has been designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in the hills and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland – of which they are many! The scope and accessibility for this scheme makes it very achievable and appropriate for Duke of Edinburgh leaders and volunteer staff, for example.

Hill and Moorland Leaders operate in terrain that is generally more remote than that used by Lowland Leaders and not as steep or rocky as ground covered by Mountain Leaders.

RAW Adventures - Mountain Training Walking Awards

The Hill and Moorland Leader qualification opens up a natural pathway to other awards and qualifications for leading and working with others in the outdoors.

  • You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of hill walking
  • You should have an interest in leading groups in the hills

Assessment

This is a 3 day (30 hour) course designed to assess you against the syllabus competencies but will be run in a relaxed style to help you perform and achieve.

Before you attend an assessment you will also be sent a ‘Home Paper’ to complete in your own time. Before booking, make sure you have done the following:

  • Attended a Hill and Moorland Leader training course (or have been granted exemption)
  • Be familiar with the syllabus
  • Logged a minimum of 40 Quality Hillwalking Days in at least three different upland areas of the UK and Ireland
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Hill and Moorland Leader

Course Cost £190.00 per person (1:6 ratio)

Precise meet locations will be sent to you upon booking but our courses run from various areas of North Wales and the Shropshire hills.

We are also happy to run bespoke courses for groups at an agreed location. Please contact us to discuss further.

Once you have been successfully assessed, you can choose to undertake the Expedition Skills Module to further your experience of looking after groups on multi-day camping expeditions within the scope of your qualification.
